Mayor Furey to Conduct Series of Town Hall Meetings

torrance-town-hallMayor Furey recently unveiled plans to conduct a series of “Torrance Town Halls with the Mayor” over the next few months.  The meetings will be held at various locations throughout Torrance with the intent of providing residents more insight into what is currently “in the works.”

As part of the Council agenda for the meeting to be held tomorrow night, the City Manager is seeking approval from the Council to allow City staff to provide support for these meetings.  How much that additional support will cost taxpayers is not identified.

The first of these meetings is scheduled to be held at North High School on October 27th.

This is called campaigning on the city’s dime!

I hope the schools put up some of the cost, since this is a ‘community’ event. Maybe the schools could even send home a reminder with the kids. They should. (I would put money on this, but now they know it.)

The City needs to be very attentive to what its Citizens have to say. Now more than ever. What better way for the new Social Media person (if hired by then) to get in touch with the Citizens.

Let’s hope it doesn’t become a pulpit for political gain.

  • Absolutely NOT !!! If city hall pays for this “Outreach” they will be met with some harsh opposition. This is clearly a plan to campaign on the tax payers dime. Mayor Furey can speak at the Council Meetings, State of the City, or put out a Mayor’s Message on the monthly email blast. But, putting more staff in the mix and costing tax payers more money, isn’t acceptable to me.

Where were your complaints when the previous Mayor did something similar? Since when do we complain when our Mayor (who is paid $100 per month) offers to reach out to the community on their own time? Because it might cost a little bit of money? Nope. Because you have personal beef. Yes.

Looks like Jr is back at it. No, the mayor is not paid just $100 a month. Someone should do a freedom of Information request to see exactly how much he gets paid, car allowance, insurance benefits, attending meetings, expense accounts etc probably total a couple of thousand a month.

We already know he has attempted on at least one occasion to increase his travel expense allowance. I wonder what he learns on these trips that we taxpayers provide for him, and pay his meals and incidental expenses. I have never heard him share any new knowledge with the public at the meetings …. although I admit I have missed a few. Perhaps he shared his pearls of wisdom then; although I doubt it.

Are you aware he isn’t a Jr? Or are you unfamiliar with their family?

To run a city of 150,000 people with third largest economy in Los Angeles County. Its severely less than almost any other city of its size. We are very lucky he is willing to work essentially full-time. Most towns that pay like that get a Council who works only a few hours a week like the rest of our council does. Go to city hall if you don’t believe it. Their mail boxes are always full until the night of Council, and you are almost never going to see more than one of them there… but you will see the Mayor. If he isn’t out at an event representing the city too.

The Mayor should do his reach out without the staff who require overtime.

This is a nice outreach to the community on the part of the mayor … but I seriously question his “timing” of these Town Hall Meetings. His “term” is up in June of 2018, just about 18 months from now. If this isn’t an attempt to “campaign” at the cost of taxpayer dollars, why didn’t he have set these up in 2014 (the year he was elected) or even 2016???? I believe this is, at least in part, being used as smokescreen so the Mayor can hopefully improve his “image” before his re-election date rolls around. I wonder how these meetings work. For example, is the public permitted to ask any question of the Mayor? If so, some of these meetings might be quite interesting.

I’m sure any meetings will be packed with his union buddies praising him and trying to intimidate any real issues being discussed.

Jr return you can see it in the wording..probably waiting for another appointment with benefits

Are you still obsessed with the Mayor’s family? Why would his son be waiting for appointments when he just resigned from said appointments? You think he resigned because he was in trouble? All you have to do is ask around to find out why he resigned? Its not a secret. LOL

Jr’s mom/mayors wife Terry is now on Personnel Commission that Jr resigned from.
