Councilman Griffiths Sidelined by Mayor Furey

In a rare public display of discord Councilman Griffiths took issue with Mayor Furey’s appointments to regional boards or agencies at last Tuesday’s meeting. Griffith’s was a notable absentee from the appointment list as all of the other councilmembers, including newly elected Milton Herring, received a nod from the mayor as either a delegate or an alternate on one of the various boards.

Of the apparent snub Griffiths boldly stated:

As can be seen on this item my name is not present.  With all due respect to the mayor’s decision I wanted to share why I will be voting no on this item.  I’ve asked the mayor on multiple occasions over the past two years to appoint me to an outside board or agency and I have received none.  In my opinion, these are important appointments and these appointments should not be politicized.  As you yourself have said mayor, we are a team here and I feel like I am sitting on the sidelines.

Mayor Furey did not directly respond to Griffith’s comments, but did dismissively state that “there are only so many appointments.”  The Council approved the mayor’s appointments by a vote of 6 to 1 with Councilman Griffiths casting the lone dissenting vote. The appointments were as follows:

Mayor Furey, and his fellow entitled, power-hungry leftists need to be voted out of office at the next election. However, I have little hope as the city hall employee unions have more control than the residents of Torrance. Sad.

And they all proclaim that they are professionals. Mayor needs to have his little tentrum at home before showing up for council.

And let’s not forget who was at the USBA expo to support small businesses. HINT, NONE of the currently sitting councilmembers including the mayor. Only the newly elected members. I thought city hall cares about small businesses.

  • I guess hell hath no Furey like a mayor scorned!

While I can’t tell with certainty why the mayor continues to refuse Councilman Griffiths an appointment, there can’t be any surprise to any of this. From Furey’s point of view, this City is his sandbox and he has handed all the toys out to everyone but Griffiths. I wonder when it happens …. when a person you knew and worked worth suddenly transforms into a creature barely recognizeable. I am speaking about Furey, of course … euphamistically. In reality, of course, Pat Furey was voted in as our mayor and, as this forum seeks to remind both politician and resident alike, this City belongs to YOU …. it isn’t the mayor’s sandbox just because he was voted in as mayor. Mike Griffiths is an independent thinker, and speaks his mind, even if he expresses opinions that don’t “fall in line” with the mayor’s views. The mayor’s “chosen” one lost the election and, I believe, he blames Mike Griffiths for this. We can all thank our vocal councilmembers as it is good balance NOT to have all on the council with the same view.
